3. τιμοθεος = Timotheos (Timoteüs). Taalgebruik in het NT: Timotheos (Timoteüs). Hnd (4): (1) Hnd 16,1. (2) Hnd 17,14. (3) Hnd 18,5. (4) Hnd 20,4. Timoteüs was een leerling in Lystra. Hij was de zoon van een gelovige Joodse moeder en een Griekse vader. Hij stond goed aangeschreven bij de gelovigen in Lystra en Ikonium. Paulus, vergezeld van Silas, ontmoette Timoteüs bij zijn tweede zendingsreis (Hnd 16,1). Hij liet hem besnijden. Hij werd een zendingsgenoot van Paulus. Tijdens die tweede zendingsreis van Paulus stuurden de gelovigen van Berea Paulus naar Athene terwijl Silas en Timoteüs in Berea bleven (Hnd 17,14). Silas en Timoteüs komen Paulus vervoegen in Korinte (na zijn vertrek uit Athene) (Hnd 18,5). Timoteüs was één van de zeven begeleiders van Paulus naar Griekenland via Macedonië (Hnd 20,4). In twee brieven wordt Timoteüs door Paulus aangehaald. Van zes brieven is Timoteüs medeauteur: (1) 2 Kor 1,1. (2) Fil 1,1. (3) Kol 1,1. (4) 1 Tes 1,1. (5) 2 Tes 1,1. (6) Film 1,1 .

Bij Paulus is een onrust waar te nemen om de boodschap snel aan zoveel mogelijk mensen te brengen om ze te redden voor het te laat is.
