Allegri: Miserere . © Jan de Kruijff, mei 2002 . Website : http://www.audio-muziek.nl/discografie/allegri_miserere.htm . Het Miserere is een boetepsalm met als thema de zonde. Die psalm werd uitgevoerd tijdens de lauden op de drie dagen voor Pasen. Het gaat daarbij om de Tenebrae diensten – naarmate zij vorderden werden de kaarsen die de kapel verlichten een voor een gedoofd totdat dit Miserere in vrijwel volkomen duisternis klonk. In Gregorio Allegri’s zetting van dit 9-stemmig Miserere mei (geschreven voor de Sixtijnse kapel in Rome) worden de even verzen van de psalm als eenstemmig koraalgezang uitgevoerd en de oneven verzen als falsobordone ofwel geharmoniseerd gezang. Het is daarop dat Allegri’s roem is gebaseerd: op de verrassende versieringen die heel kunstig werden aangebracht. Dat komt mede omdat die falsobordone wordt gerealiseerd door een afzonderlijk vijf- en een vierstemmig koor. Beide koren wedijverden als het ware in virtuositeit en versieringskunst en vooral de castraten moeten hebben uitgeblonken. Na 1870 is die kunst uitgestorven, maar uiteraard worden pogingen ondernomen om hem te laten herleven. Wie een vergelijking wil maken tussen ‘origineel’ en ‘afleiding’ kan het beste terecht bij het tienstemmige koor A sei voci (Astrée Auvidis E 8524) of het koor van King’s College Cambridge (EMI CDC 747065-2). Wie een ‘normaal’ eigentijdse opname zoekt kan uitstekend terecht bij David Willcocks (Decca 466.373-2).
